Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to use the AI?

The app is free to use thanks to Google's generous free plan, which measures usage in "tokens" (think of them like digital building blocks). Marking a single assignment uses a small number of tokens from your free daily allowance. For a detailed breakdown of what tokens are and how the free plan works, please see our costs page.

Is my data and my students' data secure?

Yes. The app does not store any of your data. All processing happens in your browser, and the information is sent directly to the Google Gemini API for marking. Your API key is stored securely in a browser cookie and never leaves your computer.

What's the difference between the Google and Microsoft versions?

The core marking functionality is identical. The only difference is the data source. The Google version pulls data directly from a Google Sheet, while the Microsoft version uses an Excel file exported from Microsoft Forms.

Why Google Gemini AI and not another, like ChatGPT?

That's a great question! It's because we first built ClarkMark AI to help the teachers at our very own school.

Our school uses Google for almost everything, our emails, our documents, our online classrooms... you name it!

Think of it like building with Lego. If your whole collection is made of Lego bricks, you'd want to get a new Lego set to add to it, because you know all the pieces will fit together perfectly.

Because we were already a "Google school," choosing Google's Gemini AI was the perfect choice. It's like the matching puzzle piece that works brilliantly with all the other tools our teachers use every day.

Does a slower AI answer cost more?

Nope! 🐌 Think about posting a letter. You pay for how much the letter weighs (the number of "tokens"), not how long it takes the postman to deliver it. The cost is always based on the amount of text, not the AI's "thinking time."

Can I ask the AI to mark too much at once?

Yes, you can! Imagine asking a friend to do 30 tasks all at once. They'd get overwhelmed and might just stop! The AI is similar. If you ask it to mark an entire class of 30 students in one single request, it may get confused and "time out." That's why ClarkMark is designed to be smart about this, providing the functionality to choose how much you wish to send for feedback in a single request.
